International Data extends beyond a Canadian perspective. These sources and data focus on other countries, and can often be used to explore concepts and principles applicable to Canadians.

  • Commission for Environmental Cooperation
    Three countries working together to protect our shared environment. Since 1994, Canada, Mexico and the United States have collaborated in protecting North America's environment through the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC). Data is available for download.
  • The World Bank Data
    Access and download World Bank data by country or topic.
  • World Cup Dataset (1930-2006)
    Find out which countries have hosted this international event over the last 80 years and who has won the cup more than once. To obtain a copy of the dataset, please contact the Education team and include your name, school and the grades/courses you teach.
  • National Hurricanes Centre
    International hurricane data (2008-present) can be downloaded from this site.
  • Data at Esri
    Includes a browsable online catalogue, as well as free downloadable data. 
  • Natural Earth
    Natural Earth is a public domain map dataset available at 1:10m, 1:50m, and 1:110m scales. Featuring tightly integrated vector and raster data, with Natural Earth you can make a variety of visually pleasing, well-crafted maps with cartography or GIS software.
  • Energy Information Administration
    International CO2 Emissions from the Consumption of Petroleum data and much more can be downloaded from this web site.
  • Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center
    Top 20 Emitting Countries by Total Fossil-Fuel CO2 Emissions for 2006 and much more information provided on this web site.
  • UNESCO Institute for Statistics Data Centre
    The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) was established in July 1999 to meet the growing needs of UNESCO Member States and the international community for a wider range of policy-relevant, timely, and reliable statistics in the fields of education, science and technology, culture and communication.
  • United Nations Statistics Division 
    The United Nations Statistics Division provides a wide range of statistical outputs and services for producers and users of statistics worldwide. On this site you will find statistics for a wide variety of social indicators, from water supply to housing to unemployment, for countries around the world. Global population data is also directly available.
  • University of Maryland, Global Land Cover Facility (GLCF)
    The GLCF is a center for land cover science with a focus on research using remotely sensed satellite data and products to assess land cover change for local to global systems.
  • Office for National Statistics
    The Open Geography Portal allows users to discover, view and download geographical reference data to support National Statistics (United Kingdom Government).
National Data

National data relates to Canada as a whole, either as single datasets that are not broken down or collections that include all of the provinces and territories. They are provided by organizations that span the country.

  • Geography Network
    The Geography Network Canada is an online resource for finding and sharing geographic content, including maps and data, from many of Canada's leading providers.
  • GeoGratis
    GeoGratis is a free website, initiated by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing that distributes geospatial data of Canada.
  • The Canadian Soil Information System (CanSIS)
    CanSIS provided ESRI with their Soil Landscape GIS Database, as well as their Land Potential Database, both of which are incorporated into the ArcCanada package. 
  • Canadian Environmental Sustainability Indicators
    Interactive Maps that allows you to view the environmental indicator data for Canada, zoom into particular regions of the country and obtain information about a particular monitoring station or emission facility. Charts bring up the appropriate information from the web site content.
  • Geobase
    GeoBase is a federal, provincial and territorial government initiative that is overseen by the Canadian Council on Geomatics (CCOG). It is undertaken to ensure the provision of, and access to, a common, up-to-date and maintained base of quality geospatial data for all of Canada. Through the GeoBase portal, users with an interest in the field of Geomatics have access to quality geospatial information at no cost and with unrestricted use.
  • Statistics Canada
    Statistics Canada is a major source of Canadian data. At their web site, they have posted data from the 1996 Census, as well as data regarding the Land, the People, the Economy, and the State.
  • Canadian National Seismograph Network (to download earthquake data)
    The Canadian National Seismograph Network contains information on all earthquakes that occur in Canada, large and small. Most importantly, it contains the National Earthquake Database. Using your web browser, you can query this database, and bring the resulting data into ArcView.
  • Global Forest Watch Canada
    Formed to provide access to better information about development activities in Canada's forests and their environmental impact. We are convinced that better information about Canada's forests will lead to better decision making about forest management and use, which ultimately will result in forest management regimes that provide a full range of benefits for both present and future generations. 
  • Canada's National Climate Data and Information Archive
    The National Climate Data and Information Archive, operated and maintained by Environment Canada, contains official climate and weather observations for Canada. 
British Columbia
  • City of Prince George
    The City of Prince George's Open Data Catalogue can become “the data source” for our citizens, organizations and private sector as we add more datasets, and in possibly a greater variety of formats.
  • DataBC
    DataBC helps the Province manage data as an asset. It enables public servants and citizens to share and use data. DataBC delivers on this mandate by providing leadership in: data governance and custodianship; data licensing; literacy and outreach; data cataloging; data provisioning; geographic data integration and management; location based services and Web mapping applications.
  • GeoBC
    This site provides a window to data and information sources provided by various ministries and agencies from the Natural Resource Sector within the British Columbia Provincial Government. The focus is on spatial and attribute data and associated applications that allow display and interaction with the data.
  • City of Vancouver
    Free data is available for download.
  • The City of Nanaimo
    The City of Nanaimo is dedicated to providing residents with the highest possible level of service.  Part of this service includes making data available to the public to allow them to make the best possible decisions, to understand the City's business, and to engage in the democratic process to the fullest extent possible.
  • City of Kamloops
    Free data to download for the City of Kamloops.
  • Township of Langley, BC

  • North Vancouver

  • City of Surrey
    This page contains links and information about Surrey's GIS datasets (aka 'spatial data') that are freely available for download in several formats.
  • North Okanagan
    Open data catalogue available for download.
  • Alberta Open Data
    The portal makes data the provincial government collects on behalf of citizens publicly available in machine readable formats with an open licence.
  • AltaLIS
    AltaLIS digital mapping products are categorized into three groups: Property, Base, and Terrain. There are free datasets available in each group under the orange tab "Sample" or "Download".
  • Alberta Geological Survey
    AGS provides interactive, geological maps of Alberta, that will let you to browse, query and download GIS data of many different kinds. 
  • Town of Banff

  • City of Calgary
    Welcome to The City of Calgary's pilot Public Data Catalogue (PDC) initiative. This PDC provides a means of increasing public access to data managed by The City; supporting not only transparency in government, but also innovation and reuse of the data by citizens and community based organizations. 
  • The City of Edmonton
    The City of Edmonton Open Data catalogue increases the accessibility of public data managed by the City. As part of an initiative to improve the accessibility, transparency, and accountability of City government, this catalogue provides access to City managed data sets in machine-readable formats.

  • City of Medicine Hat
    The City of Medicine Hat Open Data catalogue increases the accessibility of public data managed by the City.   • City of Regina
    Find free data to download in the Open Data Catalogue.
  • GeoSask 
    This is a centralized public Web site that provides one clear online access point to different types of maps and geographic information related to Saskatchewan land from across various government sources. And, for all but the most complex downloads, GeoSask is free to search and download.
  • City of Saskatoon
    Download free data from the City of Saskatoon.
  • Manitoba Land Initiative
    The Manitoba Land Initiative Web site is the source for geo-spatial information from the Government of Manitoba. It is intended for both the GIS expert and the decision maker. You must register to download data.
  • City of Brandon
    Open data available for download.
  • Region of Durham
    Open data and web map services (WMS) are available of the Durham region.
  • Ontario Base Map Data Available on the Geography Network Canada
    ESRI Canada is pleased to announce the availability of Ontario Base Map (OBM) data on the Geography Network Canada. You can view the data online, or downloaded it in any number of formats for use in many GIS software programs. Cartographic layers include wetlands and wooded areas, parks, building footprints, water, lots and concessions, spot heights, and many more.
  • Grand River Information Network (GRIN)
    GRIN is a portal to Grand River Watershed data and maps. You must register to access the downloadable data.
  • City of Toronto 
    Download data from the City of Toronto Web site.
  • Ontario Ministry of the Environment
    Download data from different monitoring programs run by the MOE.
  • City of Ottawa 
    The Open Data Ottawa site is a first step in creating a foundation that encourages digital innovation, improved service delivery, stimulation of economic growth, and a better understanding of our city.     The mandate of the Geological Survey of Newfoundland and Labrador is to map the geological framework of the province; to interpret and explain its geological evolution; and to describe, interpret and explain the distribution, nature, quantity and origin of the province's mineral resources.
Prince Edward Island
  • GIS Data Catalog: PEI
    The Government of Prince Edward Island has recently passed a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Policy Statement resulting in the creation of this website, which provides access to GIS data and other geospatial services. It will simplify the ability of all levels of government and citizens to find geographical data.

  • GeoNova, NS Geographic Catalogue 
    The Nova Scotia Geographic Catalogue Search page lets you search for a vast collection of geographic data. The search page enables you to search based on specific criteria such as area of interest, keyword, or type of content.
Yukon Territory
  • Geomatics Yukon, government of Yukon 
    Geomatics Yukon is responsible for the development and maintenance of digital geographic framework data. They coordinate with the national framework data development program, Geobase, to ensure the national data is based on the best available Yukon information and it meets the needs of the geomatics community. 
  • Environment Yukon
    Datasets available are administrative units created by the Department of Environment and are used in the management of Yukon's wildlife.
Northwest Territories
  • Northwest Territories Geoscience Office 
    This link provides access to an interactive map of the Northwest Territories, providing information on minerals, mining, oil & gas, geology, etc. Currently the map is available only for MS Internet Explorer. 
  • Northwest Territories Centre for Geomatics
    The Centre conducts Geomatics and geographic information systems projects, provides access to classified Geomatics and geographic information data bases, and promotes the application of Geomatics and geographic information systems in all resource sectors.
